About Ocean Spray
Overview
Ocean Spray is an American agricultural cooperative and food-and-beverage brand best known for its cranberry products, particularly cranberry juice, cranberry sauce, and dried cranberries sold under the Craisins brand. History
Origins: 1930
Ocean Spray’s history began in 1930 when three cranberry growers—Marcus L. Urann, John Makepeace, and Elizabeth Lee—formed a cooperative to combine their production and marketing resources and create new markets for the fruit.[1] The organisation was initially established as Cranberry Canners, Inc. in Hanson, Massachusetts, with early business focused on cranberry sauce and beverages.[2]
Marcus Urann played a pivotal role in the cooperative’s early development, having experimented with cranberry sauce prior to the cooperative’s formation and serving as a pioneer in commercial cranberry processing.[2]
Expansion during the 1930s and 1940s
In the early 1930s, Ocean Spray introduced Cranberry Juice Cocktail, transforming cranberries from a largely seasonal food into a year-round beverage. The cooperative subsequently expanded its grower base into other cranberry-producing regions.[1]
Key milestones during this period included:
- 1930: Cooperative established.
- 1931: Cranberry Juice Cocktail introduced.
- 1940: Wisconsin cranberry growers joined.
- 1941: Oregon and Washington growers joined.
- 1946: Ocean Spray began selling fresh cranberries under its brand.[3]
By uniting growers from different regions, Ocean Spray evolved from a small Massachusetts operation into a national cranberry organisation.
From cooperative to national brand
During the 1950s, Ocean Spray became a recognisable consumer brand, expanding into Canada and launching television advertising. It adopted the corporate name Ocean Spray Cranberries, Inc. in 1959.[3]
This decade also highlighted the risks of relying on a single agricultural commodity. The 1959 cranberry scare, driven by concerns over pesticide contamination, severely impacted sales and prompted the cooperative to broaden its approach to marketing, product development, and risk management.[2][1]
The Cran-Apple breakthrough
A significant innovation occurred in the 1960s. In 1964, the cooperative introduced Cran•Apple, a cranberry-and-apple juice blend that made the tart cranberry flavour more accessible to consumers.[1] This product established a lasting strategy of combining cranberry with other fruits to create more approachable beverages, leading to further portfolio expansion.[3]
Expansion into grapefruit
Although traditionally associated with cranberries, Ocean Spray diversified its agricultural base in 1976 when grapefruit growers in Florida joined the cooperative.[1] The 1970s also featured one of the brand’s most recognisable advertising campaigns, showcasing the Cran-Man character and his Cran-Wagon.[3]
Products
Ocean Spray’s product portfolio has grown significantly beyond its original cranberry sauce and juice offerings.
Cranberry juice and juice drinks
The brand is widely recognised for its cranberry beverages, which include:
- Cranberry Juice Cocktail
- Cranberry juice
- Cranberry blends
- Cranberry-and-fruit combinations
- Reduced-calorie and specialised beverages
The introduction of cranberry juice was fundamental to Ocean Spray’s transformation from a seasonal processor into a major consumer brand.[3]
Cranberry sauce
Cranberry sauce remains a signature product. Originally developed as a principal offering, the familiar jellied cranberry sauce became nationally available in the 1940s.[2][1] In the United States, it is particularly associated with Thanksgiving and holiday meals.
Craisins®
One of Ocean Spray’s most commercially significant innovations is Craisins® Dried Cranberries. Originating in 1988 as an ingredient, the brand entered the retail market in 1995.[1] Dried cranberries broadened consumption occasions beyond juice and holiday sauce, positioning the fruit as a versatile everyday ingredient for snacks, salads, baking, breakfast, trail mixes, and cooking.
Business model
Ocean Spray is structured as a grower-owned agricultural cooperative rather than a conventional publicly traded food company. The farmers who grow the fruit are also the owners of the cooperative, participating directly in the processing, marketing, and sale of products made from their crops.[1]
This structure creates a direct connection between farmers, crops, processing, products, and consumers—a philosophy Ocean Spray describes as “Connecting Farms to Families.”[3] This model ensures growers have a direct stake in developing markets for their produce.
Brand identity
The cranberry serves as the foundation of Ocean Spray’s identity. The brand emphasises the fruit’s distinctive tart flavour, bold colour, and unique growing environment. Current branding embraces these unconventional characteristics through the positioning statement: “Born Tart. Raised Bold.”[3]
Key elements of the brand identity include:
- Tartness and bold flavour
- American farming heritage
- Family growers
- Innovation
- Agricultural authenticity
Advertising
Ocean Spray has maintained a distinctive advertising history, often portraying cranberry growers standing in flooded bogs to demonstrate or discuss products. This approach differentiates the brand from conventional packaged-food advertising by emphasising the farmers and the unique agricultural environment. Notable campaigns include the Cran-Man/Cran-Wagon series of the 1970s and later slogans such as “Crave the Wave.”[1]
Innovation
Innovation has been central to Ocean Spray’s strategy of finding new ways for consumers to eat and drink cranberries. Notable developments include:[1]
- Early commercialisation of cranberry juice
- Cranberry-and-fruit juice blends
- Aseptic paper packaging and PET plastic bottles
- Craisins dried cranberries
- Nutritional products incorporating cranberry extracts
International expansion
Originally a Massachusetts cooperative, Ocean Spray expanded into Canada early in its history and later established operations in international markets including the United Kingdom and Australia.[1] In 2013, the acquisition of CranChile marked its first production facility outside North America, extending its global supply and manufacturing network.[3] Today, Ocean Spray products are sold in multiple markets worldwide.
Corporate structure
Ocean Spray occupies a unique position in the food industry as simultaneously an agricultural cooperative, food manufacturer, consumer packaged-goods brand, marketer of agricultural products, and global cranberry business. Its foundation is the grower cooperative, while its consumer-facing identity is built around the Ocean Spray brand.
Ownership and farmers
The cooperative currently consists of around 700 family farmers located across cranberry-growing regions in the United States, Canada, and other locations.[3] Historically, membership has included growers from Massachusetts, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Oregon, Washington, and Florida, as well as Canadian producers.[2][1] This farmer-owner structure is central to the company’s narrative, presenting growers as fundamental to the brand rather than merely part of the supply chain.
Headquarters
Ocean Spray is headquartered in the Lakeville-Middleborough area of Massachusetts, near the heart of the traditional cranberry industry.[2][1] The headquarters moved from Hanson to Plymouth in the 1970s before relocating to Lakeville-Middleborough in 1990.[3] Massachusetts remains historically significant as a centre of commercial cranberry cultivation.
Leadership
Tom Hayes serves as President and CEO. Under his leadership, the company’s stated purpose emphasises connecting the cooperative’s farms with families and creating sustainable results for farmer-owners.[3]

Market significance
Ocean Spray helped commercialise the cranberry as a mainstream food and beverage ingredient. Prior to products like juice drinks and dried cranberries, the fruit was primarily associated with seasonal consumption. By diversifying consumption occasions—from juice and breakfast to snacks, salads, baking, and cooking—the cooperative transformed the cranberry into a year-round consumer product.
Competitive landscape
Ocean Spray competes across multiple categories:
- Fruit juice: Competes with major juice and beverage companies.
- Dried fruit: Competes with dried-fruit and snack brands.
- Cranberry sauce: Competes with canned-food manufacturers and private-label products.
- Fresh cranberries: Competes within the broader fresh-produce market.
Its primary competitive advantage is cranberry specialisation, with the fruit remaining central to its identity unlike in diversified food conglomerates.
Health and nutrition
Cranberries contain naturally occurring compounds such as polyphenols. Research published in the 1990s increased public interest in the potential relationship between cranberry consumption and urinary-tract health.[1] However, nutritional properties vary significantly across products regarding sugar, calories, and formulation, so each product should be evaluated individually.
Sustainability
As a farmer-owned cooperative, Ocean Spray’s long-term business interests are closely tied to agricultural sustainability. Stated values include “Grower Mindset” and “Sustainable Results,” reflecting an emphasis on innovation and long-term performance.[3] Key sustainability issues for cranberry farming include water management, bog health, agricultural practices, crop productivity, climate conditions, biodiversity, and the viability of family farms.
Popular culture
Ocean Spray’s imagery of flooded cranberry bogs during harvest has become strongly associated with the brand. In 2020, a viral TikTok featuring Ocean Spray cranberry juice generated significant social media attention, demonstrating how a heritage food brand could achieve relevance with younger digital audiences.
Brand personality
Ocean Spray’s current personality is characterised as bold, unconventional, farmer-owned, playful, authentic, and cranberry-focused. Marketing efforts embrace the cranberry’s unusual characteristics, treating its tart flavour as a defining feature rather than a flaw. This is reflected in the “Born Tart. Raised Bold.” positioning.[3]
