Origins and early development
TOYO TIRES traces its origins to August 1945, immediately following World War II. Toyo Rubber Industrial, originally developed by Toyo Boseki (now Toyobo), merged with Hirano Rubber Manufacturing to form Toyo Tire & Rubber Co., Ltd.4 While the initial business scope included various rubber products and industrial technologies, tyre manufacturing gradually became the company’s primary focus.
In 1953, the company opened its Itami Plant dedicated to motor vehicle tyre production. Two years later, in 1955, it was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.5 Technological capabilities were further strengthened with the establishment of a central R&D laboratory in 1961. International expansion began in earnest in 1966 with the establishment of the company’s first overseas tyre sales subsidiary in the United States.6
Global expansion and manufacturing
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, TOYO TIRES expanded its international sales network into Europe and Australia while developing relationships within the Japanese tyre industry.7 In 1996, the company merged with Ryoto Tire Co., Ltd.
The 2000s marked a significant shift towards globalised production. Manufacturing operations were established or expanded in the United States, China, Malaysia, and Japan. The United States emerged as one of the most strategically important markets for the brand due to the popularity of pickup trucks and SUVs.8
Modern era
On 1 January 2019, the corporate name changed from Toyo Tire & Rubber Co., Ltd. to Toyo Tire Corporation to align with its ambition to become a global mobility brand.9 Following the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s market restructuring, the company moved to the Prime Market in April 2022. That same year, Toyo Tire Serbia commenced operations in July, marking the company’s first tyre production site in Europe.10
In 2025, Toyo Tire celebrated its 80th anniversary. The company has designated 2026 as the beginning of a new 20-year journey leading up to its centenary in 2045.11
Products and services
Tyres account for approximately 90% of total sales, making them the company’s principal business activity.12 The product portfolio encompasses several key categories:
- Passenger car tyres: Designed for commuting, touring, and performance driving.
- SUV and pickup truck tyres: A core segment where TOYO TIRES has established a distinct market identity.
- Off-road tyres: Engineered for mud, rocks, sand, and challenging terrain.
- Performance tyres: Focused on handling, high-speed stability, and sporty driving dynamics.
- Winter tyres: Including studless options for snowy and cold conditions.
- All-season tyres: Designed for versatility across varying weather conditions.
- Commercial tyres: For light trucks, heavy trucks, and buses.
The company also manufactures and markets the NITTO brand, which holds a strong position among automotive enthusiasts and in the North American customisation market.13
OPEN COUNTRY
OPEN COUNTRY is the product family most strongly associated with modern TOYO TIRES. Targeted at SUVs, pickup trucks, 4×4 vehicles, and adventure-oriented platforms, it has been sold in North America since 1983. Its development has been heavily influenced by the growth of customised SUVs and pickup trucks in the US market.14
The lineup includes variants for specific terrains:
* M/T (Mud Terrain)
* A/T (All Terrain)
* R/T (Rugged Terrain)
The aggressive styling of OPEN COUNTRY tyres is considered a key differentiator, serving as both functional off-road equipment and a visual component of modified vehicle identity.
PROXES
PROXES serves as the company’s flagship performance tyre family. Unlike the off-road focus of OPEN COUNTRY, PROXES is engineered for sports cars, high-performance vehicles, and road-oriented driving. It prioritises high-speed stability, handling, and cornering performance.15
Other product families
- NANOENERGY: Focuses on fuel efficiency and low rolling resistance.
- OBSERVE: Winter and studless tyre family for cold-weather conditions.
- CELSIUS: All-season tyre family offering versatility and snow performance.
- DELVEX: Designed for small commercial trucks with an emphasis on wear life and maintainability.16
Market positioning and brand identity
TOYO TIRES occupies a distinctive position in the global tyre market by combining technical off-road capability with strong visual design. While competing in standard categories such as fuel economy and comfort, the brand has made SUV and truck culture central to its identity. The popularity of the OPEN COUNTRY line grew alongside trends in lifted trucks, overlanding, off-road racing, and outdoor lifestyles.17
This strategy has positioned TOYO TIRES as part of automotive enthusiast culture rather than solely as a commodity parts supplier. Brand messaging frequently emphasises adventure, innovation, individuality, and aggressive design, often featuring desert landscapes, racing environments, and modified vehicles.18
Compared to other major Japanese manufacturers like Bridgestone, Yokohama, and Sumitomo/Dunlop, TOYO TIRES is particularly differentiated by its focus on SUV/pickup/off-road segments and enthusiast products, alongside its mainstream passenger and commercial offerings.
Motorsports
Motorsport serves as a testing ground for tyre structures, rubber compounds, and performance under extreme conditions. TOYO TIRES participates in demanding off-road competitions including the Dakar Rally and SCORE Baja 1000. Data collected from these events is fed back into the development of production tyres, particularly the OPEN COUNTRY range.19
Global production network
Toyo Tire manufactures tyres in five countries: Japan, the United States, China, Malaysia, and Serbia.20 The US facility is the group’s largest tyre plant, supporting the high demand for pickup and SUV tyres in North America. The Malaysian plant functions as a key supply hub for Southeast Asia, North America, Europe, and Japan.21 The Serbian plant, operational since 2022, supports European market expansion.22
Research and development
The company invests significantly in tyre development technology, utilising systems such as Nano Balance Technology, Nano Composite Polymer, T-MODE, A.T.O.M., and Toyo Silent Technology. R&D facilities are located in Japan, North America, and Europe.23 Development employs computational and analytical approaches to optimise the interaction of compound, tread design, casing, structure, and vehicle characteristics before physical prototyping.
NITTO brand
NITTO operates as a sister brand within the Toyo Tire group with a distinct identity focused on automotive enthusiasts, customisation, tuning, and niche performance markets. While TOYO TIRES targets the broader global market with a balance of technology and off-road capability, NITTO is built around freedom, innovation, and creativity, with particularly strong recognition in North American enthusiast circles.
Sustainability and corporate responsibility
TOYO TIRES integrates sustainability into its long-term mobility business strategy. Key focus areas include reducing environmental impact, utilising sustainable materials, lowering rolling resistance, improving resource efficiency, and carbon reduction. The company publishes dedicated environmental, social, and governance (ESG) information and sustainability reports detailing these initiatives.
Original equipment and aftermarket
TOYO TIRES supplies tyres as original equipment (OE) to vehicle manufacturers. For example, in May 2026, OPEN COUNTRY was selected as OE for the new Mazda CX-5. This complements its extensive aftermarket presence across more than 100 countries and regions, covering Japan, North America, Europe, China, Southeast Asia, Oceania, the Middle East, Africa, and Central and South America.
Automotive parts business
Beyond tyres, Toyo Tire Corporation produces automotive anti-vibration rubber components. These include engine mounts, differential mounts, strut mounts, bushes, couplings, exhaust mounts, dynamic dampers, and CV-joint boots. These products are designed to control vibration and improve vehicle refinement, stability, and noise characteristics, though they remain secondary to the tyre business in terms of revenue and brand prominence.
Competitive strengths and considerations
TOYO TIRES is distinguished by several key factors:
* Strong identity in SUV and pickup segments via the OPEN COUNTRY family.
* Deep connection with automotive enthusiast communities.
* Off-road credibility validated through motorsports.
* Over 80 years of Japanese engineering heritage.
* Global manufacturing base across Asia, North America, and Europe.
* Distinctive product design emphasising tread appearance and sidewall styling.
* Strategic focus on high-value niches rather than sheer scale alone.
However, the brand’s reputation is strongest in specific segments. For applications prioritising quiet luxury touring, maximum fuel economy, or extreme winter performance, other manufacturers may offer more specialised solutions. Additionally, performance varies significantly between product families; an OPEN COUNTRY M/T differs fundamentally from a PROXES or CELSIUS tyre due to their distinct design purposes.
