About Twinings
Twinings is one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious tea brands, renowned for its premium tea blends and more than three centuries of tea-making heritage. Founded in 1706 by Thomas Twining, the British company has played a major role in popularizing tea in the United Kingdom and around the world. Today, Twinings is owned by Associated British Foods and sells hundreds of tea varieties in over 100 countries. [1]
History
Twinings was established in 1706 when Thomas Twining purchased Tom’s Coffee House on The Strand in London. During the early 18th century, coffee was England’s dominant hot beverage, while tea remained a luxury product imported from China. Recognizing tea’s growing popularity, Twining began serving and selling loose-leaf tea to customers. His dedication to quality quickly distinguished the business from competitors. [2]
As demand increased, the coffee house evolved into The Golden Lyon, Britain’s first known specialist tea shop. Remarkably, the original Twinings shop at 216 Strand, London, still operates today, making it one of London’s oldest continuously operating commercial establishments. [3]
Royal Heritage
Twinings has enjoyed a close relationship with the British Royal Family for nearly two centuries. In 1837, Queen Victoria granted Twinings its first Royal Warrant, officially recognizing it as a supplier of tea to the royal household. The company has continued supplying tea to successive British monarchs and has maintained this distinction into the present day. [4]
Brand Identity
One of Twinings’ most distinctive features is its iconic logo, designed in 1787. It is widely recognized as the oldest company logo in continuous commercial use anywhere in the world. The logo has remained largely unchanged for over 230 years, reflecting the brand’s commitment to tradition and heritage. [5]
