Founding

Wacaco traces its origins to 2013, when industrial designer Hugo Cailleton began developing a compact espresso maker as a personal project. His goal was to create a device light and small enough for business trips that could still produce genuine espresso. According to the company, Cailleton developed more than ten prototypes while experimenting with pumping mechanisms, extraction quality, and ergonomics before establishing Wacaco with Jessie Wang.[1]

Minipresso

The company launched its first major product, the Minipresso, in 2014. Wacaco describes it as the world’s first piston-driven handheld espresso machine. Unlike conventional espresso makers, the Minipresso requires no electricity, batteries, or power outlets; extraction is powered entirely by manual pumping. This product established the core concept central to the brand: a compact espresso device that can be carried almost anywhere.[1]

Nanopresso

In May 2017, Wacaco introduced the Nanopresso as a successor to the original Minipresso concept. It featured a redesigned pumping system requiring approximately 15% less physical force than the first-generation model. The Nanopresso also served as a modular platform compatible with various accessories, allowing users to adapt the machine for different coffee preparations.[1]

Pipamoka

Wacaco expanded beyond espresso in November 2019 with the Pipamoka, a portable pressure brewer designed for preparing regular coffee rather than traditional espresso. The product was subsequently recognised with an iF Design Award in 2021. This release marked a strategic shift from solely producing portable espresso machines towards a broader category of portable coffee brewing solutions.[1]

Cuppamoka

In October 2020, the company introduced the Cuppamoka, a portable pour-over coffee maker that integrates a brewing device with a drinking cup. This design allows users to prepare filter coffee without carrying separate equipment. Wacaco states that the Cuppamoka received an iF Design Gold Award in 2022.[1]

Picopresso

Launched in June 2021, the Picopresso targets experienced users and specialty-coffee enthusiasts. Unlike capsule-based portable machines, it uses a 52 mm stainless-steel filter basket and a naked portafilter, enabling precise control over grind size, dose, and tamping. The current model weighs 350 g, has an 80 ml water capacity, an 18 g coffee basket, and a stated maximum pressure of 18 bar. It does not heat water internally, requiring users to supply hot water separately. The Picopresso received a Red Dot Design Award in 2022.[1]

Manufacturing expansion

In May 2021, Wacaco opened its own production facilities in China. The company states this move allowed greater control over manufacturing and quality while supporting global product availability.[1]

Coffee accessories

Wacaco later expanded into coffee-preparation accessories. In January 2022, it introduced the Exagram coffee scale and Exagrind manual coffee grinder, extending its range beyond brewers to include equipment for preparation and measurement.[1]

Minipresso NS2

In September 2022, Wacaco released the Minipresso NS2, a compact capsule-based espresso maker compatible with Nespresso-style capsules. The company notes that the NS2 incorporates biomass-based materials in parts of its construction to reduce reliance on conventional plastics.[1]

Pixapresso

The product portfolio has since expanded to include electric portable espresso machines. The current catalogue lists the Pixapresso alongside the manual Picopresso, Nanopresso, and Minipresso families. This represents an evolution in strategy: while manual portability remains central to the brand, Wacaco is no longer limited exclusively to hand-powered brewing.[1]
