History
Creation and Early Development
Designer Eddie Hui (许夏林) created B.Duck in 2005. According to the brand’s origin story, the character was originally designed as a gift from a father to his children—a cheerful little duck intended to accompany them as they grew up. Hui incorporated elements of his own hairstyle into the design, pairing it with expressive eyes and a friendly smile to create B.Duck’s distinctive appearance.[1]
The first B.Duck product was a waterproof radio, which marked the beginning of the brand’s consumer product business.[1]
Inspiration Behind the Character
The narrative behind B.Duck draws inspiration from a real-world maritime incident involving plastic ducks. In 1992, a cargo ship travelling from China towards Washington, D.C., encountered severe weather in the Pacific Ocean, causing containers holding more than 29,000 plastic ducks to fall into the sea. These ducks drifted across oceans for decades, reaching regions including Japan, Australia, Indonesia, and South America.
B.Duck’s fictional background incorporates this adventure, portraying the character as a traveller defined by curiosity, optimism, and a passion for exploration.[1]
Character Universe
Over time, B.Duck has expanded from a single mascot into a broader character family. The B.Duck universe includes:
- B.Duck – The original yellow duck character; energetic, optimistic, and adventurous.
- Buffy – A female duck character and B.Duck’s companion.
- B.Duck Baby – A younger version of the character.
- Dong Duck – Another member of the B.Duck family.
The brand has developed more than 25 related characters to strengthen storytelling and licensing opportunities.[2]
